Update on little Miss Samantha

Sorry everyone! I know I've been MIA but for good reason :) Just wanted to give a quick update on my girl. Today is her one week birthday! And she's doing pretty well. I know that the way life in the NICU is one of things could change at any moment, but at the moment we are very happy where she is at. Here is a quick rundown:

  • She is off her c cap again! And has been off it and doing okay for a few days now. Still on room air!
  • They took her feeding tube out and she's been bottle feeding! For awhile now she hasnt kept much down but last night and today she has :) I even got to hold her and bottle feed her today myself, which made me SO happy :)
  • She is loving her isolette. Seems really peaceful in there as opposed to the open bed she was in before.
  • She also loves her paci!
  • I've gotten to put her in a few preemie outfits which is fun :) So tiny and cute.
  • I've been pumping but its not going so well. I just get a very little bit at a time, but I always try to bring at least some back to the hospital with me. Hopefully it gets easier and my milk starts to REALLY in now that the baby is starting to actually eat.
  • I've done kangaroo care a few times which I love. That's where the baby and I lay skin to skin. Her on my bare chest. My husband did it as well and he loved it.
  • I'm not healing so well. Still have a lot of pain and I'm still the pain meds.
  • We are SO tired. Emotionally and physically exhausted. The NICU like sucks the life out of you.
  • There are a few "scary" things that they have found with our sweet girl. One is a very small brain bleed. a Grade one. Which to the doctors isnt too big of a deal, but the are going to monitor it with ultrasounds to make sure it is shrinking. So please pray for her :) They are doing another u/s ont he 20th I believe. Also, they found something elevated in her kidneys, but also they are not too concerned about it right now, just going to monitor it. So yeah, those things freak us out! But we are just praying she will be fine! :)

That's all for now! I feel like I dont have much time to blog lately or when I do sit down my brain is mush. I still want to post her birth story! So stay tune for that :) It's a crazy story that's for sure. I promise to catch up with all of your blogs soon, I apologize for being a bad blog friend lately!!!

Don't worry about being a bad bloggy friend. You have many more important things on your plate right now. :) I'm happy to hear things are going. I will be praying the little issues resolve themselves and that she will be home soon!

Thanks for the update! I can't believe you'd be worried about being a bad blogger, we all know that you are dealing with so much right now. That said, it's so nice to hear that Samantha is doing so well. I hope the good progress keeps coming and she's home ASAP.

I had trouble with my milk too. I took boatloads of fenugreek, and eventually got a prescription for domperidone which finally helped. I also noticed that for me eating avocado helped!

We all sure have been thinking of you and sweet Samantha and are glad to hear all the positive news- but totally understand your number one priority is her right now and not blogging. Sending prayers your way!

Just keep pumping. ;) you're doing a great job. Samatha's tummy is like the size of a dime, so she doesn't need much. You're doing awesome! Do you have your own electric pump? Also, just take it easy with your c-section healing. Take all your pain meds. You will feel pain at your incision for a while. It is okay. (I know. I had two.) If you ever need to talk or chat, please don't hesitate. You have a lot of hormones and difficult situations going on. Don't worry. You are doing an amazing job! And hey, you're someone's mom!!! Congrats!

You are NOT a bad friend right now! There were many months that I was too busy with a sleepless baby to blog. You have a much better reason. I'm glad she's doing okay and hope that things get even better soon.

Apology not accepted! You have nothing to say sorry for. You are a Mommy to a sweet little Miss that needs you more than we do. Go on, get a tiny bit of rest, take a moment to hug your husband. So much going on for your family right now. So grateful to be on the fringe and watching a miracle unfold. Sending love and prayers always.

You should NOT be worried about blogging, hun! We know you are being kept very busy taking care of sweet Samantha. I can't imagine how exhausted you are, I am thinking of you. I sure do appreciate the update, though! Take GOOD care of yourself - Samantha needs you healthy, too, ok? And keep up that pumping - your milk WILL come in. When will they let her nurse instead of bottle feed? HUGS to you guys!

Glad to hear that she is doing well. I know my mom stopped by yesterday to meet Samantha. I'll say that I am only slightly jealous. :) Sending good thoughts and prayers for Samantha!

Love, Allison

I know you don't know me, but I've been following your blog. I just wanted to say not to worry about the milk supply -- a lot of people here have given reasons why it may be slower and things that can help. My experience with one who had NICU time and one who didn't is that it's very much a supply and demand issue. My first was in the NICU, so I only pumped every 3-4 hours. My second was not and asked to nurse CONSTANTLY, which means I was nursing on and off every hour or so for the first 2-3 days -- and my milk came in much more plentifully. If you really want to get your supply going, just make sure you don't go too long between pumping. And good luck -- it's a long road, but once you're settled, it's much easier.
