I got a call this morning from the OB's office. Unfortunately, it was the b**** nurse "J" that I really don't like. She's always rushed and rude, I really want to punch her in the face. But anyways, I knew what she was calling about. I just had a feeling that she was going to say I failed the glucose test. And I was right. She told me my numbers were "abnormal and high." And so when I asked her for the exact numbers, I think it caught her off guard. "Well, I'll have to look through this paperwork" she said. "I'll wait!" I said. Sorry lady, you really think I'm going to get off this phone without the exact numbers? I'm an infertile, my life revolves around numbers! Finally, she found them and she said mine was 154 and they like to see it in the 130's range. Great.
Then she said they don't do the 3 hour test there and that I would have to go to a Labcorp. She gave me a number and I just called and made an appointment for 7am this coming Monday. What sucks is you can't have anything to eat or drink after midnight. Not even water! Which is going to be really hard for me, because I'm always so thirsty in the middle of the night and sip on water when I wake up (every hour) to pee. And then no food? I'm pregnant and constantly starving. This is gonna be hard. Oh well, gotta do it.
So, that means next week I have:
Monday-3 hour glucose test
Tuesday-MFM growth scan appt
Wednesday-Rhogam shot at OB's
God, help me.
I guess I can say I'm not all that surprised that I failed. Although I had a sliver of hope at my thyroid appt the other day when she pricked my finger and it was normal. I'm not sure if family genes play a part, but my brother has had type 1 since he was little and type 2 is all over the place on my Dad's side of the family. So if genetics do play a part, I knew I would be screwed. But was REALLY hoping we'd catch a break this time :( When I hung up with mean nurse "J" I realized I should probably call back and ask them about the Advair I'm on. My one hour glucose was delayed because of the two weeks of Prednisone I was on. Apparently that can effect sugar levels. Now, my asthma doctor has me on Advair at the highest dose two times a day. It's an asthma controller, so it's something I will be continuing to take. And it's actually helping me a lot! But I'm pretty sure Advair has some sort of steroid in it. So now I'm wondering if that effected my one hour and if it will effect my three hour??!! So I called the nurses line at the OB and left a message.
I really really don't want to have to do insulin shots. I am SO done with shots. I hope that I'll be able to control this with some diet fixes. Or maybe it will be a miracle and I'll pass the 3 hour? Hmmmm yeah, I guess I'm wishing big...
**What happens at a 3 hour test? Are there three blood draws? Do I just have to drink one cup?**

Oh I am so sorry! I failed my one hour test, but passed the 3 hour test. So there is hope for you! Fingers crossed you pass the test and can avoid the insulin shots!
I got a 171 on the one hour and still passed the three hour with flying colors. You never know. I highly recommend bringing a snack with you to the three hour so you can eat immediately after the last blood draw.
At least you get to do the three hour test. My levels were too high so they didn't even bother lol! :p think good thoughts, lots of women pass the 3 hour after failing the one hour. Could be you! And yes, my OB told me genetics plays a big role. And def a good idea to ask about the advair. Sorry you had to deal with the bitch nurse again.....ugh!! Busy week for you next week!
I also failed the one hour but passed the three hour test. I hope the same for you!
I agree with PP - bring something to eat with you to the test so that the moment you're done you have something and you're not scrambling to get in your car and drive home for food.
I was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes with my second pregnancy. When I was first diagnosed I cried for like a week (my endocrinologist put me on insulin right away and I felt like a such a failure that I couldn't control it with diet alone). Anyway, there are actually four blood draws--one to determine your fasting level and then one at each hour for three hours.
Family history can definitely impact your risk. Lack of sleep, stress, and medications can also have an effect on your numbers-- all things that you've been (unfortunately) dealing with. Good luck on the three hour test!
Good Luck!
Well shit...that sucks. I'm sorry about the fail, but the good news is that you still have one out (the 3 hour test) and if all else fails you can know that it's only temporary. Although why the universe saw fit to give you one more piece of shit is beyond me. Maybe the universe already knows how cute Sam is and is evening the scales. :)
My niece was on Pednesone for Bell's Palsy during her pregnancy and she failed the one hour. Being on any type of steroid is going to make you sugar off.
Good Luck!
uuugh!! So sorry to hear you didn't pass the one hour. Hoping for better news with your test monday.
Hope you get good report next time around...sounds so frustrating!
I failed my one hour and passed the three hour as well(wish I could remember my numbers). I don't remember them doing anything different than the first time...just more to drink I believe.
Even if you do have GD, I think that the vast majority of the time it's controlled by diet alone. You'll have to test your blood/sugar but I don't think you'll need insulin.
I don't know personally what happens at the three hour, but I think you have to drink a ton of that glucose crap and get your blood drawn every hour.
Don't feel bad though, lots of people fail the one hour and then pass the three hour.
It does seem like an annoying test though!
Same as others, I failed the one hour but passed the three hour. Did you happen to fast before your one hour? I did not and I think that affected my result. With my three hour I went in, they did a baseline draw, I drank the drink, and then they drew blood three more times, one every hour. JJ went with me and we just watched movies on his laptop. I was afraid of not being able to drink water and having a hard time actually finding good veins, but that wasn't an issue. I felt good enough to go to work after I was done. Good luck!! I hope you pass, but if you don't, it is definitely something that can be managed throughout the rest of your pregnancy.
Like others said it's a 4 blood draw process. I strongly suggest bringing a snack with protein so you can eat as soon as your done. I was really shakey and sick by the end.
BTW I failed my 1 hour in the 170s or something crazy and passed the 3 hr with flying colors.
It's funny that they like the 130s. My doctor's office said they wanted below 150. So you have a good chance of passing the 3 hour!
Good luck!
