Meat.

I have been craving meat.

Normally, I'm not a big meat eater. I do eat lots of chicken, but not a huge red meat fan. I do like burgers, but generally chicken is my go-to-meat. But now, during this pregnancy..I like need meat...

Last night I sent my husband on a quest for meatballs. I have have also been craving steak, burgers, meatloaf, RIBS. I never eat ribs. What's my deal?

Just a pregnancy craving, I guess? Anyone else turn into a crazy carnivore while pregnant? :)

You are probably deficient in iron right now - that's been the case for me for most of this pregnancy. Listen to those craving - your body is trying to tell you something!

Also, eating protein throughout the day will help keep the nausea at bay b/c it helps to regulate your glucose levels. Positives all around!

I had been a total vegetarian for 2 years when I got pregnant. I didn't eat meat during the 1st trimester (still sounded gross to me), but after that there was no meat I didn't love. In fact, I can't even consider a meal is really a "meal" without meat. And I'm not sure mine has to do with needing the iron. I had really good iron levels even in the first trimester. They have always been good. I don't know why I want it so much!

I am curious if I'll still want meat after baby comes or if it will sound gross again.

For me it was not so much a meat craving as an aversion to vegetables (which I normally love)...I couldn't even look at a head of lettuce without wanting to gag. It went away about midway through my pregnancy.
Don't know if you're a fan of FRIENDS but remember Phoebe wanted meat during her pregnancy and she was a vegetarian lol

I'm having similar issues. Recently I had cut back a lot on beef and was even developing a slight aversion to beef because of how I would feel afterwards. But the other day we were at a friend's place grilling burgers (made sure he grilled it well done!) and to me it was the best beef ever- just the protein/iron I needed. However I find that other proteins like nuts, beans, and eggs gross me out. I still eat them cuz I need the iron/folic acid, but the texture nearly makes me gag.

I agree with the others, it's just your body telling you to get some more iron! It's amazing how in turn our bodies are to the baby's needs. Eat away!

That's so funny! My Mom was the same way, chicken only girl until she got pregnant and then she consumed a life time's worth of roast beef apparently :)Eat up red meat is yummy!

Yes! I craved steak like crazy. It was all I could think about. We never used to eat much beef at all, but I started making steak twice a week to assuage my cravings. I also craved spinach and strawberry salads, and raw tomatoes. I went crazy for tomatoes.

And then I got my blood work done, and I was slightly anemic. I think my body was craving iron.

I practically ate a hamburger a day when pregnant with my girls!

You must need it, so eat it! I always craved carbs - bad, bad! And I went gluten free for my first tri! Just eat what you need and what you want - it's the only way to survive the first tri:).

I did. I desperately wanted heavier food (and I'm a light carbs, salad-craver normally.) And ribs! Gah! I'd have killed for them pregnant. It was weird, too, because I'd crave it, but because I threw up for 20+ weeks of my pregnancy, I'd also be repulsed!

It is actually completely different for me... I was attempting to be a vegetarian for about 10 months before IVF. Then couple of weeks bafore IVF I started eating chicken because I was worried about not getting enough protein. Then once I got pregnant I can't even think about meat, chicken of fish - it all sounds so gross.... :( I really do not have appetite for anything except for fruits :( Hopefully that will change because starting 2nd trimester I will need ~75g of protein!

Totally normal. You are subconciously needing to keep up your iron and protein.

Like everyone else is saying!
